Karen Weber May Become the Next Terri Schiavo

A case eerily similar to Terri Schiavo’s is building once again in Florida. Karen Weber, 57, suffered a stroke in December and has been “periodically” in a nursing home and hospital since. Her mother believes she is responsive and that she does not want her feeding tube removed while her husband, Raymond Weber, wants the tube removed.

AP reprorts that: Mr. Weber would only say: “I don’t want this to become a media event.” His attorney, Colin Cameron, said his client does not want this case “to turn into a Terri Schiavo-type circus.”"Mr. Weber is of the opinion that Karen does not want to live as a vegetable and that she would prefer the body to take its natural course,” Cameron said.

There is currently an injunction prohibiting the removal of the tube but that is little hope when one considers how Terri Schiavo was murdered.

A year ago March, Christa Lilly awoke for three days from a coma-like state she’d been in for six years. Coma Miracle on Discovery Channel UK recounts stories of coma awakenings after years in vegetative states. A man in Italian man woke up from a coma after 2 years and reported that he heard everything. An Oregon boy woke up after 22 months in a vegetative state.

We cannot know what miracles the Lord has in store for us. There may be none – but then He may choose to act in ways we could never imagine.

Human life is human life. It is valuable because our Lord and Creator tells us it is. He imbued us with his breath of life and made us in His image. The SLED argument against abortion works here as well: Size – Does your size make you human? Level of Development – Do your capabilities make you human? If I’m smarter or faster than you am I more qualified as a human? Environment – Does your location in space make you more or less human? Dependency - Does your reliance on air and food make you less of a human? Does someone’s use of a wheelchair or insulin make them less human? Does the method of food provision matter?
Karen Weber is in grave danger. She is deserving of our respect as a human. She needs our help to avoid being murdered by the state as Terri Schiavo was.
